FATHER’S DAY TIPS,
TRICKS RECIPES & MORE

Father’s Day Tips from Mag Ruffman, Canada’s Tool Girl

Don’t Miss Mag Ruffman’s Tooling  workshop at this year’s Toronto Fall Home Show.

TOOL TIPS

1. Never be flummoxed in a hardware store; know the names of parts you’re looking for – a great reference book is The Complete Illustrated Guide to Everything Sold in Hardware Stores (available at Chapters)

2. If you don’t like using power tools, you may simply be sensitive to high noise volume.  Buy an ear protection headset.  The dramatic reduction in sound volume makes it easier to concentrate and improves confidence.

3. Remember that renovating will test your ingenuity and self-esteem; giving in to despair is human, but joking about despair is god-like.

4. Stock a decent home-repair manual.  Forego the gender-specific books and go for a good basic volume – Ortho’s Home Repair Problem Solver or Black & Decker manuals are great.

5. Love your tools and love what you can do with them.  Make things instead of buying them.  Stay in motion.  DIY is the new frontier.

SEASONAL TIPS

  • All exterior wood surfaces around your home should be sealed at this time of year.  Even pressure-treated wood!  (PT lumber contains bug-resistant chemicals, but it isn’t weather resistant except in its first year.)
  • Put a fresh coat of paint on exterior-door wooden thresholds.  Keeping the wood sealed will add years to your threshold and prevent it from getting pitted, split, dry-rotted and spongy.
  • For instant crystal clear glass, wash your windows using the professional secret – a  squirt of Dawn dish detergent in a gallon of warm water applied with a lambswool scrubber.  Then squeegee off the moisture in seconds.
  • Install a de-humidifier in your basement to get rid of summer condensation that produces mould and mildew (the leading cause of childhood asthma).
  • If you have a humidifier attached to your forced air furnace, it’s time to change the filter or soak it in vinegar.  Subtle clues that your filter needs changing: It’s petrified with mineral deposits and has no elastic properties of any kind. Replace it or soak it in a pail of vinegar.

BAREFOOT SANGRIA RECIPES

WHITE SANGRIA
1 bottle of Barefoot Sauvignon Blanc (chilled)
1 lemon, squeezed and then chopped
1 lime, squeezed and then chopped
1 orange, squeezed and then chopped
½ cup strawberries chopped
1& ½  cups of President’s Choice White Grape & Peach juice
1 cup club soda
1 cup ginger ale

RED SANGRIA
1 bottle of Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon (chilled)
1 lemon, squeezed and then chopped
1 lime, squeezed and then chopped
1 orange, squeezed and then chopped
½ cup strawberries chopped
3 cups of ginger ale
1 cup President’s Choice White Grape & Peach juice.

Scottie's Beermosa
1/3 OJ
2/3 Mill Street Belgian Style Wit

The key to using the Wit is that this nectar of the gods is already brewed with Coriander and Orange peel so the already fruity flavours and aromas are enhanced if not complimented by the OJ.  Of course the fact that the beer is unfiltered just adds to the look and feel of this brunch favorite cocktail.

Pan-Seared Pork Chop and Sweet & Sour Cabbage
Recipe by Massimo Capra, Mistra courtesty of Reno & Décor Magazine

Serves 4

4 pork chops – 10 ounces each, trimmed of fat
4 cups of Savoy cabbage – shredded
2 cups of sweet onions – julienned
16 baby carrots cleaned
1 cup diced canned tomatoes
4 cloves of garlic
1 sprig of rosemary
1 bunch of sage
salt & pepper to taste
1 tsp sugar
3 ounces olive oil
1 glass of white wine
2 ounces 35% cream

Preheat skillet and add olive oil.
Add two crushed garlic cloves and the onions, and sweat at medium
heat for about five minutes. Add the cabbage; turn the heat up to
high and season with salt, pepper and sugar. Stir well until wilted,
about five minutes. Move the cabbage to the side of the pan and in
the middle add the tomatoes, cook for a few minutes and then bring
the cabbage into it mixing well. It should look similar to sauerkraut.

While the cabbage is cooking, preheat a skillet on high, add oil,
season the pork chops with salt and pepper, and place in the skillet.
Sear well on both sides and then add the remaining garlic, sage and
rosemary. Sprinkle with the wine and let the alcohol burn out, then
add the cream and turn the heat down to complete the cooking – about
10 minutes.
If needed, place a lid on top.

Preheat a second skillet, add oil and the carrots, and season with
salt and pepper. Roast on high heat for about
4 minutes allowing the carrots to take on some colour, but do not
overcook.

Scoop the cabbage and place on
a serving platter, place the chops
on it, arrange the carrots casually, drizzle with the sauce from the
chop pan and serve.
